A Conversation with Alejandra Melgoza: On Authenticity, Donkeys, and Changing the Narrative

Alejandra Melgoza is an artist known for her grounded presence on screen and her passion for authentic storytelling. In this interview, she shares how her Mexican upbringing has shaped her career, from embracing her emotional depth to navigating her roles as a bilingual actress. She opens up about her creative passions, including her journey into music, her advocacy for mental health, and the unexpected joy of her two pet donkeys.

You’ve been described as having a grounded presence and emotional range on screen. How did your upbringing in Mexico shape the way you approach your roles today?

I grew up in Mexico and that’s really shaped how I see the world and how I approach my work. Family, community, and resilience are such strong values there, and I bring that into every project I work on. There’s also a natural depth of emotion in our culture, and that helps me tap into vulnerability deeply.

As a bilingual actress based in LA, how do you navigate storytelling in both English and Spanish, and how important is cultural authenticity in the roles you choose?

Being bilingual gives me so much freedom in storytelling. Sometimes when I switch to Spanish, I feel my emotions come out more raw, more instinctive. In English, I find I can be more precise and layered. What matters most to me is that every role feels authentic, that it reflects real life and it inspires someone to feel less alone. I love that stories can resonate differently in both English and Spanish, and ideally, each role challenges me as an artist.

Your passion for causes like mental health awareness and empowering young women really stands out. How do you use your platform to advocate for these issues meaningfully?

I’ve always felt a calling to use my platform for more than just fun. I try to share the kind of advice I wish I had heard as a teenager, almost like an older sister. Sometimes that’s motivation, sometimes it’s a reminder that you’re not alone, but always something that I hope uplifts and helps the younger audience.

You’re also an emerging musician—learning both piano and bass guitar. What role does music play in your life and creative process?

Music is something I didn’t even know I needed. It’s about patterns, creation, and self discovery. So much of it is muscle memory, which feels very similar to my acting journey. Both require presence, practice, and a deep emotional connection.

Your love for animals is unique—especially your two pet donkeys in LA! Can you tell us the story behind them and what they’ve brought to your life?

Yes, I actually have two pet donkeys! They’re so special to me and have brought so much joy and peace into my life. I’d wanted donkeys since I was a little girl, so having them now feels like a dream come true. In many ways, they’re like therapy – I feel such a deep connection with them. Taking care of them reminds me to reconnect with what’s simple and real.

Fashion and wellness are clearly big parts of your identity. How do you express your personality through style, and what’s your go-to wellness ritual?

Fashion, for me, is self-expression. I love mixing feminine pieces and I see style as the story you tell about yourself, how you choose to present who you are to the world. Wellness is just as important to me. My go to ritual is meditation every morning, no matter what, and I always write my thoughts first thing so I can clear my head instead of worrying about what needs to get done.

Many fans connect with your social media not just for entertainment, but for inspiration. How do you strike a balance between vulnerability and privacy online?

I think people resonate with me online because I share my truth, but I also keep parts of my life sacred. I try to be vulnerable in ways that inspire, such as sharing my growth, lessons, and the things that have helped me. At the same time, I protect what’s personal to my relationships and family. That boundary keeps me grounded while still allowing me to inspire others.

As a Latina actress in Hollywood, what changes are you seeing in representation, and what stories are you still eager to see on screen?

I love seeing how much more space there is now for Latina actresses in Hollywood, But I think we still have so many more stories to tell. I’d especially love to see Latinas leading in genres like psychological thrillers, roles that show our depth and complexity beyond the stereotypes.

Being a content creator with over 100K followers comes with influence and responsibility. What’s one message you hope your followers take away from your journey?

If there’s one thing I want people who support me to take from my journey, it’s that everything is possible when you believe in yourself and stop repeating old patterns. You really are the creator of your own life. I used to hold myself back in so many ways until I realized I could change it all and I want people to know they can do the same.

Looking ahead, whether in acting, music, or advocacy, what’s a dream project or collaboration you hope to pursue in the next year?

In the next year, I’d love to be part of a project that really challenges me. Maybe an indie film with raw powerful storytelling. And honestly, blending acting with music someday would be a dream.
