Aesthetician Holly Cutler: The Surprises of Running a Business

What was a major challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are today?

One challenge I faced is money. I’m sure I’m not the only business owner who dealt with that early on. When I decided to start my own clinic, I didn’t have the resources. I had to borrow $3K from a friend to get started. Now the business sustains itself, but I’m very grateful to have had that support to get started.

What has surprised you most about running your own business?

People assume you’ll have more freedom if you’re your own boss, but that’s never the case. You’ll work harder than you ever thought was possible. And you’re not only answering to your staff, but to all of your clients. I love running my own business, but it’s not as freeing as a lot of people think!

What’s your definition of success?

It’s not about the numbers for me. That’s not what I strive for and it’s not what’s important to me. Success to me is doing and being better than I was yesterday. It’s about growing. I don’t compare myself to anyone else, only to myself. Success is also about enjoying the journey and having a spiritual foundation to everything you do.
