Google Maps Is Changing: These Features Are Going Away Soon

Although Google Maps has many fantastic features, it looks like one of the more sociable ones may be eliminated in the next months.

The ability to follow contributors on Google Maps will be discontinued, per a recent post on Google’s community help page. In September 2025, this planned change will take effect automatically and will involve the removal of all information pertaining to both your followers and those who follow you.

Additionally, you will still have the option to hide certain content from view, and your profile’s visibility settings will remain unchanged.

You can still examine user contributions even if Google is eliminating the option to actively follow other users. The only significant change is that these reviews and photos will no longer show up on your For You tab.

Additionally, Google notes that users can still use Google Maps’ list feature to discover new places to visit or connect with contributors on Local Guides Connect.

The elimination of the follower feature will frustrate some people, particularly if you appreciate your friends’ thoughts, evaluations, and images of nearby eateries, among other things. There is a benefit to not having to deal with continuous notifications, though, as there have been numerous complaints regarding bots spamming follower requests during the feature’s five years on the app.

Other modifications to Google Maps

On the good side, Google Maps is getting a lot more features, like the introduction of the new screenshot capability, even though we might be losing this one. This makes it easier to locate directions to places that have been screen-grabbed and viewed online with Google Maps for iOS.

It enables Google Maps to swiftly search through your photo collection and compile all of your photos with geographical data. After that, you can utilize these screenshots to make travel plans.

Additionally, we recently noticed that Google Maps appears to have deleted the media playback capability from the Android app. Google has recently stated that this was caused by a bug rather than an official update, despite the fact that many were devastated by the loss. Users shouldn’t be impacted for very long because Google is reportedly working on a solution.

Although this adjustment won’t have an impact on the app’s user base, it may indicate that some users should switch to another app. Nevertheless, neither Waze nor Apple Maps allow you to follow other users.
