Google Messages is beginning to implement “Delete for everyone”

The ability to remove a chat message for all participants in a group RCS conversation is coming to Google Messages for Android.

As we observed in February, there are two choices available when removing a message:

  • For everyone, delete
  • For me, delete

The first one will allow you to actually delete something that was sent to another contact or to everyone, whereas the latter is the current practice. Google acknowledges that “Messages may still be seen by others on older app versions,” despite this.

In a broader sense, users can “Edit, Recall and Delete message that they sent earlier for themselves and the message recipient” with Universal Profile 2.7.

One user of the beta release, who also has the ability to create custom icons, claims that this feature is only visible in a single group conversation with a size of about twelve participants. This option is presently absent from 1-to-1 talks and smaller chats.

On the devices we looked at today, Google Messages’ Delete for Everyone feature is not visible. Other group chat capabilities that Google is developing include the ability to join using QR codes and invite links, as well as @-mentions.
