Google Rolls Out May 2025 Pixel Update With Critical Security Fixes

As of today, May 6, Google Pixel devices are expected to receive the May 2025 security update, which contains a vital fix for a zero-day security threat. Along with 28 security patches for problems impacting Google and Android services, the update also includes three bug fixes. The deployment of the May 2025 update may take a week, according to the business, and may not be visible right once depending on your provider and device model.

The zero-day attack identified as CVE-2025-27363 is one of the security flaws fixed in this month’s Pixel update, according to the Android Security Bulletin. According to the bulletin, “there are indications that CVE-2025-27363 may be under limited, targeted exploitation.” This basically means that in order to prevent becoming a victim of this security exploit, you should update your device as soon as the May 2025 patch becomes available.

The bootloader on your device will also be updated with anti-rollback features as part of the May 2025 security patch. You won’t be able to use previous iterations of Android 15 on your device after updating. This is most likely a reaction to the zero-day exploit solutions included in the April and May patches.

“The May 2025 update for Pixel 6 (6, 6 Pro, 6a) and Pixel 8 (8, 8 Pro, 8a) devices contains a bootloader update that increments the anti-rollback version for the bootloader,” Google states. This stops the device from reverting to earlier, weaker bootloader versions. You won’t be able to flash and boot previous Android 15 builds on these devices after flashing the May 2025 upgrade.”

According to Google’s release notes below, the May 2025 update also fixes three bugs that affect the Pixel 6 and more recent smartphones and tablets:

Audio

Fix for apps that have poorer microphone recording quality

Bluetooth

Resolve Bluetooth connecting problems with specific smartwatches in specific scenarios

Structure

Fix for secondary language that appears in quick settings in specific circumstances

All Google Pixel users should install the update as soon as it becomes available. Open the Settings app, select System > Software update > System update, and then click Check for update to see if there are any updates available. Once the OTA update is available, download and install it by following the on-screen instructions.
