The appearance and structural characteristics of Azerbaijani tar

Amin Zebarjad :Azerbaijan tar is a member of the family of stringed instruments. The resonating bowl of this instrument, like the Persian tar, consists of two parts: a large bowl (boyuk chanaq) and a small bowl (kichik chanaq) for ease of expression. We call the first part the bowl and the second part the drum. The bowl is one piece and compared to the Persian tar, it is smaller and the piece is more voluminous. The back of the bowl is relatively smooth and flat unlike the Persian tar. The smaller volume of the bowl and the flat back allow the musician to place it comfortably on his chest. The opening of the skin surface that is stretched on the bowl and drum is more. The shape of the opening of the bowl is not dissimilar to that of the Persian tar, but the opening of the naqara is almost round, and in general, the bowl of the Azerbaijani tar is more elongated than the Persian tar. The Azerbaijani string does not have a standard size and is often made in a small overall size (for children) and a large overall size, and each musician chooses the desired string according to their physical condition.

Amin Zebarjad : Despite the differences that the bowls of each instrument manufacturer have compared to other manufacturers, the bowl of this instrument ultimately follows the two patterns of Tbilisi and Baku. In the Tbilisi pattern, the edge of the bowl is more curved, and for this reason, it fits more easily in the musician’s lap. In the Baku pattern, the edge of the bowl is sharper. Sometimes threads are made whose bowl pattern is the middle of Tbilisi and Baku pattern. In East Azerbaijan, both patterns are used. Inside the bowl of this instrument, a piece of wood is placed lengthwise as a support, which prevents the possible bending of the handle. This piece of wood is connected to the end of the bowl on one side and to the end of the drum on the other side (this wood does not go inside the handle and is only attached to the handle). The skin that is stretched over the bowl and drum is also two parts. (one part on the bowl and the other part on the drum).
