Mason McNulty Turns Relationship Pain into Powerful Anthem with New Single “DUST”

Actor and musician Mason McNulty delves into the cathartic process behind his upcoming single “DUST,” set to release on May 2nd. In this candid Q&A, McNulty reveals that the track emerged from the emotional fallout of a difficult relationship, using the evocative title to symbolize the “emotional wreckage” left behind. He hopes the song’s message of reclaiming personal power and self-worth will resonate with listeners who have faced similar experiences. McNulty also discusses how “DUST” marks a sonic departure from his debut, highlighting his artistic growth, and shares the influence of artists like Elvis and Jelly Roll on his music. Drawing parallels with his acting career, including his upcoming role in “Billy the Kid,” McNulty explains how storytelling and performance skills intertwine with his musical expression.

Q: You’ve mentioned that your drive to create music stemmed from a need to heal. In what ways has the process of writing and recording “DUST” been cathartic for you?

A: DUST has been cathartic to me because I was really caught blindsided when the relationship, I was in had gone south. DUST has given me a way to express those feelings and to convey that I will not allow someone to treat me the way that this person did.

Q: The title “DUST” is quite evocative. What is the significance of this title in relation to the themes explored in the song?

A: The title “DUST” reflects the aftermath of a toxic relationship—what’s left when everything has fallen apart. It speaks to the emotional wreckage, the residue of fights, and the sense of being worn down until you decided to Leave you in the DUST.

Q: You’ve stated that “DUST” is about telling someone they no longer have control over your life. What message do you hope listeners who have experienced similar situations will take away from the song?

A: The message I hope that the listeners will take away is that you will be ok, you matter and that there is a special place for you and your feelings.

Q: How does “DUST” sonically differ from your debut single, “Lessons of Love,” and what does this evolution say about your growth as an artist?

A: DUST differs because Lesson’s of Love was more about my 2 past relationships before DUST. One was a bad toxic relationship and the other ones was just timing wasn’t right. DUST is about telling the toxic relationship Good Bye. Leaving you in the DUST.

Q: With “DUST” set to release on May 2nd, what are your hopes and expectations for how this song will connect with your audience?

A: I hope that the listeners can turn up the radio and blare the song. Sing it so loud and proud. Show the world that you will take back your feelings and mind.

Q: Beyond the personal narratives, what broader themes or social issues are you interested in exploring through your music in the future?

A: I want to explore just feel-good music that can be exciting and move everyone. I am excited to see what my listeners think of my work.

Q: Who are some of the musical artists who have most influenced your sound and songwriting style?

A: Some of the biggest influences to me have been Elvis, Jelly Roll, Josh Turner and Brad        Paisley. I love their sound and I love singing their music. But…There is one person who I see and work with has been a huge inspiration to me is my producer KThrash. I am always inspired by watching him and just seeing how he is a musical genius.

Q: You have a significant background in acting, with notable roles in “Schooled,” “Teen Wolf,” and more. How has your experience as an actor influenced your approach to songwriting and performing music?

A: My influence approach to songwriting and performing music has had a significant part of my acting. When I am writing, it helps with the storytelling, when I am performing my acting skills completely help me while on stage to not be nervous in front of people.

Q: You have two feature films, “Mi Loca Quinceañera” and “Billy the Kid: Blood and Legend,” coming out. How do you navigate the demands and rewards of both the music and film industries?

A: I love balancing both my acting and my music career. When I am on location, and I have a day off I am still working on my music with my team. It has not been to difficult at least not yet.

Q: Playing the titular role in “Billy the Kid” is a significant undertaking. How did you prepare for such an iconic role, and are there any parallels you can draw between embodying a character and expressing yourself through music?

A: Playing Billy the Kid was a real opportunity that I have always wanted to play. Diving into Billy did require for me to dapple into emotions that I don’t usually go to. Music did help me prepare for the role. When I had to get into a certain emotion, I would put my ear buds in and listen to Donut Larsen and Jelly Roll.
