Microsoft closes the renowned “Blue Screen of Death”

Microsoft is ending the notorious “Blue Screen of Death” after more than 40 years. Soon, the well-known error message will be shown on a black background.

While outlining broader steps to increase the Windows operating system’s resilience, the tech giant made the news in a blog post on Thursday.

“Now it’s easier than ever to navigate unexpected restarts and recover faster,” the business stated in a statement.

Microsoft’s efforts follow the 2024 Crowdstike event, which caused a massive IT disruption that crashed millions of Windows PCs worldwide.

What’s fresh?

If a major issue required Windows to abruptly shut down or restart in order to protect data, the “Blue Screen of Death” or Blue Screen error was shown.

According to the company, it is “streamlining” the experience of users who encounter “unexpected restarts” that cause disruptions.

The measures include redesigning the error screen that customers have seen for over 40 years, often in an irritating way.

The wording in the updated error message is substantially shorter and set against a black background.

It will say, “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart,” as shown in an image posted on Microsoft’s site.

Instead of a sad face icon, the error message now displays the restart process’s % of completion.

According to the software giant, all of its Windows 11 (version 24H2) devices will have this “simplified” user interface for unexpected restarts starting later this summer.
