A new version of Google Photos’ “Ask Photos” search function is now available, along with an option to completely turn it off. Here’s how to disable Google Photos’ AI search.
“Ask Photos,” an AI-powered method of exploring the depths of your Google Photos collection, was initially released in late 2024. Although it was infamously slow, it featured some fantastic concepts, such the ability to search for certain events using the names of individuals that Photos can recognize. In order to modify the system, Google had to temporarily halt the rollout, and that is currently unavailable.
Google Photos’ redesigned “Ask Photos” feature is quicker and cleaner. Like the heritage search, it displays results almost instantly. It then generates its AI results after the fact to further the search. Although Google has made a good compromise, it is still technically optional.
Google Photos will allow you to completely disable AI search, which is becoming a more uncommon feature for tech in general. The Gemini-integrated search, that is. Although Photos has always employed AI in search to some degree, the most recent features can be disabled with the updated choices.
How to turn off Google Photos’ AI search capabilities
To begin with, you will need the most recent version of Google Photos. These alternatives are being made available by Google through a server-side update, so all you have to do is wait for your turn and make sure you’re using the most recent version of Google Photos on iOS or Android. If you force-close the app on Android, you may be able to access the feature more quickly.
You should tap on your profile image and search for “Photos settings” if you have the update. Select “Preferences” and then “Gemini features in Photos” from that page.
There are a number of options in this revised area, but the toggle for “Search with Ask Photos” is the one we’re really looking for. You may fast and completely disable “Ask Photos” by turning off this feature. When switched, the Photos bottom bar’s “Ask” button changes to “Search,” restoring the original user interface.
You might not see these options just yet since, as previously said, this is a server-side deployment that is currently happening.
Given that the prior option was a really esoteric shortcut, it’s wonderful to have the option.
