Xiaomi and Leica Introduce an Optical Institute to Advance Mobile Imaging

In an effort to improve mobile imaging, Xiaomi and Leica established the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute. By combining digital imaging, artificial intelligence (AI), optical expertise, and smartphone technology, this partnership represents a significant advancement.

The recent release of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is the first step in the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute’s mission to establish new industry standards for optical performance in mobile devices. The optical system in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is the latest collaborative milestone for the company and is expected to be the best Summilux lenses available for mobile devices, leading the way in the next generation of mobile optical imaging.

William Lu, partner and president of Xiaomi Group, stated, “With the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute, we will further leverage the respective strengths of both parties, continuously extend the boundaries of mobile imaging optical capabilities, and consistently lead the way in the mobile imaging era.”

The institute focuses on four main technical areas:

1. creating small but accurate optical lenses

2. Improving computer-generated imagery

3. upholding exacting standards for lens quality

4. investigating state-of-the-art optoelectronic technologies.

Leica Camera AG CEO Matthias Harsch stated, “By establishing the Xiaomi x Leica Optical Institute, we are poised to bring together top-tier teams from both sides within the field of optics.” “Together, we are committed to paving the way for a new era in mobile imaging optics, expanding the possibilities for mobile imaging, and creating a cutting-edge mobile imaging optical system fit for the modern world.”

As part of its R&D support, Xiaomi established three cutting-edge labs in Beijing with a focus on imaging, camera hardware, and image quality evaluation. These 2644 square meter facilities will rank among the biggest and most cutting edge camera labs in the world.

Xiaomi and Leica have committed a large amount of money and put together a combined team of more than 200 specialists to accomplish this goal. Optical Expert will be Peter Karbe, the renowned optical designer behind Leica’s fourth generation of lenses, which includes iconic designs like the APO series and Noctilux. The director will be Zeng Xuezong, the president of the Xiaomi mobile phone department and senior vice president of the Xiaomi group. Wang Xuanran, General Manager of the Xiaomi Camera Department, and Yi Yan, Head of the Software Technical Team at Xiaomi Group, will act as Deputy Directors.
