On older iPhone models, iOS 17.2 unlocks support for Qi2 wireless charging

For owners of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, iOS 17.2 unlocks a big new feature: Qi2 wireless charging support. This happened before the first Qi2 accessories were released this month and following the announcement that the iPhone 15 would be the first iPhone to support Qi technology.

The second version of the Qi wireless charging standard, or Qi2, is magnet-focused. Qi2 offers up to 15W wireless charging in addition to all the other advantages of magnetic charging, much like Apple’s exclusive MagSafe charging system. This covers things like simpler alignment and increased efficiency.

“Qi2 charger support for all iPhone 13 models and iPhone 14 models” is something that iOS 17.2, according to Apple, brings.

This implies that without upgrading to the iPhone 15, older iPhone owners will be able to benefit from up to 15W charging speeds when utilizing Qi2 accessories.

“In time for the holiday season,” the Wireless Power Consortium reports that the initial Qi2 accessories will be made available. According to the WPC, “over 100 devices” are either undergoing testing or are waiting to be certified. The first Qi2 accessories will be produced by companies such as Anker, Mophie, and Belkin.

Next week, iOS 17.2 is anticipated to be made available to the general public.
