Stevie Soprano is an American hip hop recording artist hailing from the Tristate area. Soprano was raised in Philadelphia in the 1990s and graduated from high school in New Jersey, so it comes as no surprise that most of his musical influences stem from hip hop’s gritty underground scene. Soprano asserts that some of his favorite artists include the likes of LL Cool J, Big Pun, Busta Rhymes, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Ghostface Killah, and Prodigy. Soprano was even fortunate enough to let Prodigy hear some of his music prior to Prodigy’s death in 2017. These artists whom Soprano grew up listening to serve as the primary inspiration for Soprano’s own original tunes.
Stevie Soprano considers himself to be an avid admirer of hip hop music, and he believes that true hip hop should render a specific sound. Soprano still enjoys some contemporary artists, but he believes that the true flaw in today’s music lies in a lack of creativity. Soprano admits that sometimes he will listen to the radio with no ability to determine which mainstream artist is rapping. He may hear a song by Quavo while thinking the whole time that Lil Pump is rapping. Soprano misses the days when different rappers where easily discernable. In the 90s, no music listener would have trouble distinguishing Tupac from Biggie Smalls or Nas from Jay-Z. It seems undeniable that the majority of today’s hip hop radio hits sounds as though they are all performed by a single artist.
Soprano gravitates toward modern rappers such as Benny The butcher and Conway The Machine, but his goal is to stay in his own lane. Soprano is less impressed by the easy-going, fun-loving rap styles and instead seeks the storytelling of true lyricists in music. Soprano is here to make similarly conscious rap songs, and true hip hop fanatics will surely relate to his style.
